Sarah:

Welcome to Let's Talk about brain tumours, the podcast where we'll be talking to people who have been affected by brain tumour diagnosis, either their own diagnosis or the diagnosis of love, but we'll also be sharing news and updates in the brain tumour charity about what we're doing to have the harm and double survival.

Chandos:

Hi, everyone, and welcome back to the brain tumour charity podcast. In this episode, I'll be speaking with Tamsin about the new weekly lottery, the charities launched, where you could be in with a chance to win up to 25,000 pound, we'll be speaking about the impact this funding will have, how you can get involved yourself so Tamsin Can you tell us a bit about you and what your role is

Tamsin:

Yep. So I work in the individual giving team, I'm an individual giving officer. And I basically help support some of the fundraising activities. And one of those newest streams is actually our lottery.

Chandos:

So can you tell us a bit about the lottery fundraiser and what it is? How does it work?

Tamsin:

Yeah. So the lottery, which we've called our win big, weekly lottery, it's a brand new fundraising product for the charity. It's a new way of fundraising for the charity, because it allows players to donate whilst also the chance to win something. So by playing the lottery, they get that chance to win up to 25,000 pounds each week. And yeah, so it's a really good way for people to give, but also get the chance to give something back as well.

Chandos:

And what was the motivation to start doing this kind of form of fundraising.

Tamsin:

And well, we've been wanting to do this for a while now. But it's, it's a bit of a, it's quite new. So obviously, trying to get that sign off can take a little bit longer, but it's proven, especially over COVID is quite a sustainable fundraising stream. And it will really help us go towards our goal of defeating brain tumours. But also, like I said, it gives those individuals chance to win a prize. It's a really good longevity fundraising tool, and actually, with time so hard for many at the moment, they still want to give but having that chance to potentially win something back as well as really exciting. But it ultimately it's another tool to help us raise those essential funds for more research.

Chandos:

How exactly does it work? What's the process,

Tamsin:

So it's, it's a digital product, but it can actually still be done, you know, people can sign up via telephone and mail and all sorts. But we work with an external lottery manager called Sterling, and they help us run it. So they will manage most elements for us in terms of the prize draw informing players that they've won, and helping us stay compliant because it is, in fact, a gambling activity. So obviously, we need to make sure that we are up to date with all the gambling rules. Tickets are just one pound each, and players can play up to 10 lines each week. And they can either sign up for like direct direct debit, debit card or cheque. But we don't actually accept any cash or credit cards. And then what happens each week is when someone signs up, they'll receive their own unique six digit lottery number, and they have to, it's basically a matching game. So if you get more of the numbers, then the bigger your prize. So they're all there four prizes up for grabs. The fourth one is five new more entries into the lottery. The third prize is 25 pounds, the second prize is 100, sorry, 1000 pounds, and then the top prize is 25,000 pounds. So people have that chance every week to win. And it's all done securely using, as I mentioned, you know, a gambling compliant random number generator. And yeah, those prices are issued and automatically posted to the winner. But we do have the rule that people have to be over 18 or over to play, obviously keep it as top line as possible.

Chandos:

And how do they sign up to be part of this is the brain tumour charity website with it. And

Tamsin:

yeah, so people can go to our website and look under fundraising tools and getting involved and you will find a link to the lottery there. We do in fact, have a separate microsite so people would need to go to lottery dot the brain tumour charity.org Or they can actually phoned us up and we can put them in the right direction. They can also speak to our external lottery manager, and they can be contacted on 01229871380 The easiest way is to just do that through the website, and then they can put in all of their details and everything from there.

Chandos:

Great And at the end of the day, it's all helping to raise vital funds to help us end the impact of brain tumours on individuals. So it's helping to reach out our main goal and objective.

Tamsin:

Yeah, exactly. So, you know, we've, we pay a little bit of the admin to the external lottery manager. But apart from that all of those lottery funds are going right back into the brain tumour charity pot to Help us find a cure.
